Fr Michael Klebansky was born in 1936 in what is now Inner Mongolia, China, he was educated in Chjalantun and worked as a fitter and turner from 1950 until his 1962 arrival in Australia, when he began work as a toolmaker. He married Natalia (nee Kuzora) in April 1963, and was ordained to the diaconate three months later, and assigned to the parish in Cabramatta. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1965, serving in Cabramatta (and other parishes in Sydney), being elevated to archpriest in October 1978.
In 1981, he was appointed Dean of St Nicholas Cathedral and Dean of Queensland, where he served until his retirement for health reasons in November 1996, a time that included service on the Diocesan Council and services at the Gold Coast community. From 1999-2000, he accepted a temporary assignment to be confessor to nuns in the Holy Land, after which he returned to Brisbane.
He later came out of retirement; he was appointed rector of St Seraphim’s, before being appointed rector of the Vladimir Icon Parish in 2007. As Dean of Queensland, he was appointed interim rector of our parish in 2010 (while remaining rector at the Vladimir Icon Parish), and organised for services to be continued on a regular basis at our parish, served by Fr John Weir, Fr Alexander Borodin and Hieromonk John (Macpherson). He was made a Mitred Archpriest in December 2013, and continued to serve as Dean of Queensland and Rector of the Vladimir Icon parish until his repose in May 2016.
This biography is provided as part of a parish history. An interim rector, Archpriest Michael Klebansky was preceded by Priest John Weir, and was succeeded by Priest Alexander Borodin (our current rector).
